The old Neil has just released a… what, his fiftieth album? It’s hard to keep track…
It’s called Second Song.
The twilight of a career, a backward glance, 80 years of life…
In three milestones, suggested by Uncut magazine, here’s the road that leads to this record with its distinctly valedictory feel…
In 1992, Harvest Moon comes out, and although Neil is only 47 at the time, the album already belongs to the late-career phase of his work… The 1970s will forever remain his golden age. The 1980s were erratic, but far from unworthy, and many albums released shortly before or after Harvest Moon come close to matching their illustrious predecessors (to name a few: Freedom, Ragged Glory, the incandescent live album Weld, Sleeps with Angels…).
Harvest Moon… Given that Harvest (1972) is an absolute classic by the Loner and, more broadly, of North American music, it took some nerve to give it a sequel…
And yet Neil rises to the challenge with panache, delivering a collection of songs that sound almost all like instant classics.
Introspection, nostalgia, a hushed, woody atmosphere, a love affair weathering the years… Neil, not quite an old man yet, strums his guitar and blows into his harmonica… Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor provide the backing vocals… What more could you ask for?
