Another very famous example of this lineage of California-based singer-songwriters from the seventies who had a major influence on our young Alex Amen: American singer James Taylor began his career by catching the Beatles’ ear and signing with Apple for a debut album featuring contributions from McCartney and Harrison.

After a stint in England and then a return to the United States, he settled in California in 1969 and released the following year the album that made him a star, Sweet Baby James.

Pure-bred folk-rock, post-sixties gloom, with hard-drug addiction thrown into the mix. Once again, it’s extremely well-crafted. You can obviously prefer the music being made in the same place a few years earlier, which was arguably more exciting (the Byrds, the Doors, Love…), but there you have it.

For the French: without James Taylor, mustachioed Francis Cabrel might never have picked up a guitar. Taylor is his absolute idol.

Pour les Français : sans James Taylor, le moustachu Cabrel n’aurait sans doute jamais empoigné une guitare. C’est son modèle absolu.
