So, while we’re on the subject of young guys who sound like old-timers, here’s one we didn’t give nearly the attention he deserved back in 2015. Quite a character. The guy released an album 11 years ago, then another one in 2025 that somehow slipped under our radar and really deserves to be discovered…

Two handcrafted records that, let’s say, passed miles below the general public’s radar… And yet, this big Californian-based guy is probably loaded. Why? Well, he’s written hits for people like Justin Bieber, Adele, Harry Styles, Dua Lipa… ultra-successful superstars of glossy, polished, perfectly calibrated pop—in short, the kind we’re not particularly fond of around here.

But Tobias, when he makes music for himself, is wonderful and the complete opposite of the artists mentioned above. He seems to like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Paul McCartney (the I Will, Blackbird, Junk, Dear Friend Paul McCartney, keeping a low profile…). Piano and vocals dominate; sometimes there’s an acoustic guitar, and other generally understated instruments occasionally make an appearance (drums, horns, strings…). It’s moving, melodic, handmade. A wonderful album with not a weak track on it.

Tiens, pendant qu’on évoque des petits jeunes qui sonnent comme des anciens, celui-ci, on ne lui a pas accordé l’attention qu’il méritait en 2015. Étonnant personnage. Le gars a sorti un album il y a donc 11 ans, puis un autre qui nous a échappé en 2025 et qu’il faudrait aller découvrir…

Deux disques d’artisan qui sont, disons, passés à des kilomètres des oreilles du grand public… Et pour autant, ce grand gaillard basé en Californie est sans doute plein aux as. Pourquoi ? Oh, il a écrit des hits pour des gens comme Justin Bieber, Adele, Harry Styles, Dua Lipa… superstars ultra vendeuses de la pop lustrée, léchée, calibrée, bref, celle qu’on n’aime pas trop ici.

Alors que lui, le Tobias, ce qu’il fait pour lui, c’est merveilleux et tout l’inverse des artistes cités ci-dessus. Il semble aimer Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman et Paul McCartney (celui de I Will, Blackbird, Junk, Dear Friend, profil bas…). Le piano-voix domine, parfois une guitare acoustique, d’autres instruments globalement plutôt discrets sont parfois présents (batterie, cuivres, cordes…). C’est touchant, mélodique, artisanal. Une merveille d’album sans titre faible.
