Is that McCartney? No! / C’est McCartney ? Non ! 6/30

We’ve already had occasion to discuss Squeeze during the long daily series devoted to the 1980s. An English band that emerged from the late-’70s new wave scene, whose two songwriters have been compared to Lennon and McCartney, Squeeze were also influenced by the Kinks, Bowie and Costello (we’ll be talking about him next week, as it happens). Costello also handled production and backing vocals on this ethereal track, which you could easily swear was sung by Macca. A really ugly cover, though, for this 1981 album.

We were talking about Ron Sexsmith last week, who, incidentally, sang Tomorrow in Your Eyes, while Squeeze declare There’s No Tomorrow. Here’s a funny little anecdote: back in the mid-’90s, one of the members of Squeeze, while hosting Ron Sexsmith at his home, arranged an impromptu breakfast at none other than Paul McCartney’s place, who lived nearby. Just imagine the three of them singing together (apparently a Wings cover), over a pot of Earl Grey and two or three scones, with Ron Sexsmith absolutely overcome with shyness!

On parlait de Ron Sexsmith la semaine passée, qui, d’ailleurs, chantait Tomorrow in Your Eyes, alors que Squeeze déclare There’s No Tomorrow.

Hotel California !
