What is it called? Cool Jazz. And if you want to annoy the purists: West Coast Jazz (roughly speaking, cool jazz that made its way from the East Coast to the West Coast and ended up being played by Californian… and white… musicians!).

When was it? From the late 1940s to the early sixties…

Who are the key figures? Ever heard of Miles Davis? If not, there’s also Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan…

Where did it happen? New York City, once again, but also California (Q.E.D.).

What instruments are involved? Well, we keep the same ones as in bop!

What did it grow out of? As I was saying: bop was a revolution, but do we really need to play 34,000 notes in every tune? Cool, man!

What does it sound like? Well… everybody takes a breath. It’s more elegant, more fluid…

And what should we listen to as the perfect example?

Boplicity.

Now, some people might say: « There are cooler examples of cool jazz than that. » Fair enough, fair enough… But it comes from the 1957 album collecting recordings made in 1948 and 1949 called Birth of the Cool, so… let’s keep our mouths shut.
