Is that McCartney? No! / C’est McCartney ? Non ! 3/30

Come on, we were talking about the darling… Darling? Ah, no, Elliott is more than that. Elliott is the artist I bring out like a talisman, the one who pretty much separates true friends from traitors to the cause. Insensitive to the melodic brilliance, the fragility of that voice, the stark and profound beauty of those songs? Impossible.

Elliott, as one of his early collaborators recalled in an article in Uncut (the English rock magazine for old people like me), was aiming the highest. Elliott didn’t walk around thinking his competition was Weezer, he was competing with the best of music always, forever. . And the best, for him, were a Liverpool band whose name began with B. We remember with delight his cover of “Because” for the film American Beauty, in which he tried, all by himself, to penetrate the secret of George, John & Paul’s vocal harmonies.

Anyway, even if he was probably closer to Lennon’s wounded state of mind than to Paul’s mischievousness, we’re here for the latter.

Baby Britain, OK, the voice—you can’t mistake him for the absolutely magnificent and versatile singer that Paul is (to convince yourself, try, for example: Long Tall Sally, Oh! Darling, Maybe I’m Amazed, Here, There and Everywhere, I Will, Got to Get You Into My Life; rage, rage, rage, tenderness, tenderness, soul…)… But otherwise, that melodic line, that guitar… Pure Macca. And, of course, a big big love.

A reminder from the Politburo: you cannot criticize Elliott Smith. It’s not forbidden; it’s impossible. Big Brother is watching you.

Allez, on parlait du chouchou… Chouchou ?

Darling, Maybe I’m Amazed, Here, There and Everywhere, I Will, Got to Get You Into My Life ; rage, rage, rage, douceur, douceur, soul…)…

Big Brother is watching you.
