2026: V.U.

A year ago, we left cult figure and fiercely independent veteran Simon Joyner at rock bottom, with an ultra-dark album shaped by the death of his son. Tough Love, released earlier this year, is another winner (apparently his 19th album…), a touch more varied than its predecessor. Two major influences stand out: Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed, which is setting the bar pretty damn high.

Tough Love kicks off with Annelie, a guitar chord and a haunting violin immediately bringing Heroin to mind, before the vocals and soft backing harmonies introduce a girl’s name that instantly takes us back to treasures like Candy Says and Stephanie Says—quite simply, two of the greatest songs ever written.

From the very first line of Wild Palms, you could swear you were listening to Cohen… A little further in, after the gorgeous Two Black Irises, comes Isn’t This How the Story Always Begins, sounding as if it had been lifted straight off the third Velvet Underground album—or V.U.
