Curtain call on our musical journey through the land of Prefab Sprout.
Paddy’s last dispatch came with this album (2013), a beautiful and deeply endearing collection of genuinely new songs (even if some of them were written back in 1997), recorded shortly before its release rather than being a mere compilation of demos that had been gathering dust for nearly fifteen years. The title, Crimson/Red, might be mistaken for a reference to King Crimson’s Red, but it’s actually a tribute to the American painter Mark Rothko.
It’s beautiful, richly rewarding, and sounds just a little less rooted in the ’80s than usual (though you can’t change who you are—Prefab Sprout will always bear the imprint of that decade), while remaining impeccably polished in terms of production. There’s a genuine affection for this record, one we had almost stopped hoping would ever see the light of day.
Paddy’s final musical statement? This song—the closing track on Crimson/Red—a delicate tribute to Dylan.
And to paraphrase, from memory, a review in the French music magazine Les Inrockuptibles around the time Jordan was released, which imagined Paddy inhabiting a certain pop heaven (the one shared by the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, the Beatles’ Rubber Soul, the Kinks’ The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, and the Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle…): hold your head high, Paddy—you were already there.
It’s now 2026. Thirteen years have passed since the man who has become the druid of County Durham last gave us any news…
