Now signed to Kitchenware Records, Prefab Sprout released a second single in 1982, The Devil Has All the Best Tunes, a song that, apparently, didn’t do much to impress the people around the band, who thought it was too long and not catchy enough. Never reissued on any of Prefab Sprout’s greatest hits CDs, the track also gives us our first taste of someone who would become a vital part of the band’s sound (even if her backing vocals can occasionally be just a little grating): singer, guitarist and keyboard player Wendy Smith, who, incidentally, would be Paddy’s partner for quite a few years.

Since we’re a bit fussy around here, aren’t especially keen on the A-side, and happen to own the original 7-inch, we’re going to spin the B-side instead, where you can hear Wendy’s voice all the same.

The rock press greeted the single warmly.

Next stop: Swoon, the band’s debut album and the record that truly launched Prefab Sprout.

Maintenant signé chez Kitchenware Records, Prefab Sprout sort un deuxième single en 1982, The Devil Has All the Best Tunes, un morceau qui, apparemment, ne convainquait guère l’entourage du groupe, lequel le trouvait trop long et pas assez catchy. La chanson, jamais rééditée en CD sur un best of de Prefab Sprout, permet d’entendre pour la première fois un membre très important dans le son du groupe (même si ses chœurs peuvent parfois être un tantinet crispants) : la chanteuse, guitariste et claviériste Wendy Smith, qui, accessoirement, formera un couple avec Paddy pendant pas mal d’années…

Comme on est un peu chichiteux ici, pas forcément hyper fan de la face A et heureux propriétaire du 45 tours, on va plutôt s’écouter la face B, sur laquelle on entend quand même la voix de Wendy.

La critique rock accueillera ce single de manière bienveillante.
