And just like that, Uncle Tupelo split up in 1994. Jeff Tweedy went on to form Wilco (yes!), while singer Jay Farrar founded Son Volt and, in 1995, released a superb debut album: Trace.

The songs are every bit as strong as those on No Depression (Uncle Tupelo’s first album, for those keeping track), but to my mind the record has three major strengths above all: a welcome balance between harder-driving songs and quieter ones, the complete abandonment of the gravelly vocal affectations, and much greater restraint in the guitar work (two or three tracks still feature the kind of guitars that could become a bit wearing over the course of No Depression).

A triumph, then!

Les chansons sont aussi solides que sur No Depression (le premier album d’Uncle Tupelo, pour ceux qui suivent), mais le disque possède surtout, à mon sens, trois gros atouts : une alternance bienvenue entre des morceaux un peu musclés et d’autres plus calmes, l’abandon total des effets rocailleux dans la voix, et une grande retenue au niveau des guitares (deux ou trois morceaux contiennent encore ces guitares qui, à la longue, pouvaient fatiguer sur No Depression).

Une réussite, donc !
