Donovan… we don’t take this guy seriously enough. Seen at the beginning as a copy of Dylan, without the latter’s flashes of genius, and even mocked by the Zim himself in the documentary Don’t Look Back, he’s carried ever since the image of a nice hippie with somewhat schoolish lyrics… Yeah, well…

From 1966 to 1969, he released five albums that make up his psychedelic period — and watch out: it’s absolutely delightful… and even of a very, very high level. While his foundation remains folk, with the help of producer Mickie Most, he added jazzy, baroque, groovy, and psychedelic touches to great effect. Let’s take a look at a few examples.

The album Sunshine Superman opened the doors to the American market for him (Donovan is Scottish) in 1966, with two hits: Sunshine Superman and Season of the Witch. Then, in 1967, Mellow Yellow included the hit of the same name. We already listened to the magnificent Sand and Foam a few years ago; now, with its heady arrangements, here’s Hampstead Incident.

Donovan… on ne prend pas assez ce type au sérieux. Vu à ses débuts comme une copie de Dylan, sans les fulgurances de ce dernier, et même moqué par le Zim en personne dans le documentaire Don’t Look Back, il traîne une image de gentil hippie aux paroles un brin scolaires… Mouais…

De 1966 à 1969, il sort cinq albums qui constituent sa période psychédélique, et attention : c’est tout à fait délicieux… et même de très, très haut niveau. Si sa base reste le folk, épaulé par l’arrangeur Mickie Most, il y ajoute des touches jazzy, baroques, groovy, psyché, du meilleur effet. On va voir ça avec quelques exemples.
