It’s pretty wild when you think about it. The guy’s just there to watch a Dylan recording session… though, yeah, he’s got a little idea in the back of his mind—maybe he can sneak in a bit of guitar. Problem is, Mike Bloomfield from The Paul Butterfield Blues Band is already there. So yeah… not happening.

There’s always the organ. Not really his thing… in fact, he’s never played it on a studio recording before. Whatever. Let’s give it a shot. He’s not exactly nailing it… but Dylan doesn’t care. Better yet, he actually asks for it to be pushed way up in the mix.

The result? Aside from Dylan’s How does it feel, what’s the one thing everyone remembers about this track? The organ. Al Kooper’s organ. (We’ll be talking about that guy again real soon.)

And what track are we talking about, anyway? Oh, just a little thing. You know, for many, the greatest song in rock ’n’ roll history. Dylan sharp and ruthless, the band locked in… They call that a masterpiece. And you can catch it in theaters right now.

C’est quand même dingue quand on y pense. Le mec est juste là pour voir une session d’enregistrement de Dylan… bon, il a quand même une petite idée derrière la tête, pouvoir jouer un peu de gratte… problème, Mike Bloomfield du Paul Butterfield Blues Band est là, donc bon… pas moyen. Y a bien l’orgue, pas son instrument de prédilection… à vrai dire, il n’en a jamais joué sur un enregistrement en studio… Allez, hop, on verra bien. Il est pas tout à fait dedans… mais en fait Dylan s’en fout, mieux, il réclame même qu’on le mette très en avant dans le mix. Résultat ? A part les How does it feel de Dylan, de quoi on se souvient dans ce titre ? De l’orgue, de l’orgue d’Al Kooper (on reparlera du gaillard très vite).

De quel titre on parle au fait ? Oh, une bricole, juste, pour beaucoup, la plus grande chanson de l’histoire du rock’n’roll… Dylan méchant et vachard, les musiciens au diapason, on appelle ça un chef-d’oeuvre. Et c’est à voir au cinéma en ce moment…
