Marianne Faithfull was the angel of the sixties, only to crash and burn among The Rolling Stones—then at the peak of their creative power but already being drawn, inevitably, toward opioids.

Battered but alive, she emerged from the hell of heroin in the late ’70s and managed to release her magnum opus in November 1979: Broken English, a raw, synth-driven album featuring a cover of Lennon’s Working Class Hero, the haunting The Ballad of Lucy Jordan (already mentioned in these pages), and of course, the iconic title track.

Marianne Faithfull has died today. She was 78.
