You learn something new every day… or at least you realise you’re not always paying close attention. Steve Cropper — sure, we knew he was on tons of Stax recordings… but looking a little closer, well, here he is on this Velvet cover recorded by Big Star in 1974 for the album Third/Sister Lovers, only released in 1978. After all, we’re in Memphis, and the Stax and Ardent studios aren’t that far from each other… and on the way you can even pass near Sun Studio. Good grief, right? It’s crazy… Yeah yeah. Crazy. Everything packed into a pocket handkerchief.

Big Star at the end of the road: heartbreaking, wavering, on the verge of collapse. A good opportunity to point out the greatness of this band — and, as is obvious here, the influence it had on Elliott Smith — while also saluting our friend Lou Reed, the author of the song. Beautiful. More than beautiful.
