A little happiness never comes alone…

A new Modern Nature album has just come out. So, I dive back into their discography, but also into Ultimate Painting’s, another band led by Jack Cooper. And of course, that takes me back to The Proper Ornaments, since their frontman, James Hoare, was the other half of Ultimate Painting… And bam, I find out he released a solo record last year! Damn!

Anyway, let’s recap.

Jack Cooper and James Hoare played together from 2014 to 2018 under the name Ultimate Painting. At the same time (2014 to 2020), James Hoare was also a member of The Proper Ornaments, often celebrated here (favorites). He then released a record under the name Penny Arcade in 2024. Jack Cooper, meanwhile, formed Modern Nature—already mentioned in these pages—in 2019, after Ultimate Painting split. We’ll be talking about Modern Nature next week and about Ultimate Painting in a fortnight…

Today, Penny Arcade: barely thirty minutes of hazy, dreamlike immersion, where you’ll find everything we loved so much in The Proper Ornaments. Gently psychedelic lethargy, soft melancholy, stripped-down means. Once a favorite, always a favorite.

Un petit bonheur n’arrivant jamais seul…

Un nouvel album de Modern Nature vient de sortir. Du coup, je replonge dans leur discographie, mais aussi dans celle d’Ultimate Painting, autre groupe du leader Jack Cooper. Et forcément, je replonge dans The Proper Ornaments, puisque leur leader, James Hoare, était l’autre membre d’Ultimate Painting… Et bim, je découvre qu’il a sorti un disque solo l’an passé ! Mince !

Bref, récapitulons.

Jack Cooper et James Hoare ont joué ensemble de 2014 à 2018 sous le nom d’Ultimate Painting. Dans le même temps (2014 à 2020), James Hoare était aussi membre de The Proper Ornaments, plusieurs fois célébrés ici (chouchous). Il a donc sorti un disque sous le nom de Penny Arcade en 2024. Jack Cooper, lui, a monté Modern Nature, déjà évoqué dans ces pages, en 2019, après la séparation d’Ultimate Painting. On parlera de Modern Nature la semaine prochaine et d’Ultimate Painting dans quinze jours…

Aujourd’hui, Penny Arcade : même pas trente minutes de plongée cotonneuse et rêveuse, où l’on retrouve tout ce qui plaisait tant chez The Proper Ornaments. Léthargie gentiment psyché, douce mélancolie, économie de moyens. Chouchou un jour, chouchou toujours.
