In the end, it’s quite a challenge to get noticed with a super catchy and instantly recognizable track after just one listen. Let’s Go Surfing (yeah, we’re staying in that Beach Boys vibe) by The Drums is kind of that — the little whistled hook that works perfectly and all.

But then, over the course of a whole album, it’s hard to keep it up. On the debut, though, it’s seriously impressive — you listen, bam, track 1 is great, track 2 is the hit, 3, 4, 5, 6, damn, they’re actually doing it! Like, nothing but hits, melodies that stick in your head… 7th track, a slower one, really nice… but watch out, there are still 5 more to go… okay, maybe it loses a bit of steam toward the end, might need to revisit it. But still! In a Joy Division kind of style (in terms of production and the bass-drums-guitar playing style) meets The Beach Boys (for the melodies), it’s kind of the perfect summer record.

C’est finalement un sacré challenge de se faire connaître avec un titre hyper accrocheur et immédiatement reconnaissable après une écoute. Let’s Go Surfing (oui, on reste dans l’esprit Beach Boys) de The Drums, c’est un peu ça, le petit gimmick sifflé qui va bien et tout.

Mais après, sur la longueur d’un album, c’est dur de tenir la route. Sur le premier opus, c’est quand même super impressionnant, t’écoutes, bim titre 1 nickel, titre 2, le tube en question, 3, 4, 5, 6, bon sang, ils vont le faire ! Style, que des tubes, des mélodies qui retiennent l’oreille… 7e morceau, un titre plus lent, très chouette… mais attention derrière, il y en a encore 5… bon, peut-être que ça se tasse un peu sur la fin, faudrait y revenir. Mais quand même ! Dans un style Joy Division (niveau production et style de jeu basse-batterie-guitare) meets The Beach Boys (pour les mélodies), c’est un peu le disque d’été idéal.
