The story is ultimately simple.

The Beach Boys start out as a hit machine (delicious!), but their leader has bigger ambitions. He becomes productively jealous of Spector, and especially McCartney, and gradually drags his bandmates—willingly or not—into creating THE gold standard album of American pop, Pet Sounds (we bow down, and rightly so). Then he fries his brain on acid trying to push sophistication even further… and what follows wavers between bursts of genius and mental illness.

Les Beach Boys commencent en machine à tubes (délicieux !), mais leur leader voit plus loin, jalouse de manière productive Spector puis surtout McCartney, entraîne bon an mal an ses compères dans LE disque maître-étalon de la pop américaine, Pet Sounds (on se prosterne, et c’est justifié), puis se crame la tête à l’acide en voulant aller encore plus loin dans la sophistication… et le reste oscille entre sursauts de génie et maladie mentale.
