A resilient, underground, and influential figure in American rock, David Thomas, the only original member of the band Pere Ubu, passed away a few days ago.

His first album, The Modern Dance, released in 1977 (along with the second, Dub Housing, which you should really get your hands on), remains a classic of experimental rock demolition — a collision between the Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, and Zappa… a kind of post-punk right in the middle of the punk explosion.

The title track still vaguely resembles a classic rock song (with the guitarist’s backing vocals, whose voice recalls Tom Verlaine from Television), but between the strange interludes and the bizarre synth arrangements, it’s clear that noise and experimentation were what really interested the man.

Le morceau-titre ressemble encore vaguement à une chanson de rock classique (avec les backing vocals du guitariste, dont la voix rappelle celle de Tom Verlaine de Television), mais entre les étranges intermèdes et les arrangements de synthés bizarroïdes, on voit bien que c’est le bruit et l’expérimentation qui intéressaient notre homme.
