In short, Brian James, founding member of The Damned and principal songwriter for the band’s first two albums, has passed away.

Recorded as it should be—fast, raw, full throttle, under the watchful yet underrated guidance of Nick Lowe—this first blast from The Damned has everything that makes punk’s early years so irresistibly fresh and charming: pop songs played at breakneck speed by a bunch of irreverent, mischievous kids.

Less famous than The Clash or the Sex Pistols, less overtly melodic than the Buzzcocks, less adventurous than Wire—The Damned, forever the first, as they say in Marseille…

Bref, Brian James, membre fondateur des Damned et principal compositeur des deux premiers albums du groupe vient de mourir.

Enregistré comme il se doit, à l’arrache, le pied au plancher, sous les bons auspices du fondamental bien que sous-estimé Nick Lowe, il y a dans ce premier jet des Damned tout ce qui fait le charme et la fraicheur absolus de ces années punk : des pop songs jouées à 100 à l’heure par des gamins irrévérencieux et potaches.

Moins connus que The Clash ou Sex Pistols, moins ouvertement mélodiques que Buzzcocks ou moins aventureux que Wire, The Damned, à jamais les premiers, comme on dit du côté de Marseille…
