David Johansen, thick-lipped frontman of the New York Dolls and proto-punk Jagger clone, passed away last Friday. A major band in rock history, often seen as a bridge between early rock and the punk movement—a ragged, debauched version of the Rolling Stones emerging from the underbelly of New York—the group drew a motley crowd, drawn to their excess and raw energy, but struggled to find a broad audience beyond their hometown.

After their debut album in ’73, with a slightly lackluster production by Todd Rundgren (probably too polished and serious to handle musicians this wild and unhinged), the New York Dolls released the aptly named Too Much Too Soon before imploding—despite the backing of Malcolm McLaren, future manager of the Sex Pistols…

Hailed by critics and a handful of famous fans (including a certain Morrissey), their first two albums (the band briefly reformed in the 2000s…) still haunt the all-time greatest rock ’n’ roll lists.

Groupe important de l’histoire du rock, souvent vu comme un pont entre le rock des origines et le mouvement punk, version déglinguée des Rolling Stones issue des bas-fonds new-yorkais, le groupe a attiré en son temps une faune interlope aimantée par son outrance et son énergie mais qui eu bien du mal à toucher un large public en dehors de sa ville natale.

Après un premier album en 73, avec une production un poil terne de Todd Rundgren (sans doute trop pro et sérieux pour se frotter à des musiciens aussi déjantés et peu expérimentés), les New York Dolls ont sorti le bien nommé Too Much Too Soon avant d’imploser malgré le soutien de Malcom McLaren, futur manager des Sex Pistols…

Groupe adulé par la critique et par quelques fans célèbres (dont un certain Morrissey), les deux premiers albums (il y a eu une reformation dans les années 2000…) continuent à squatter les listes des meilleurs albums de rock’n’roll ever.
