The Jam‘s drummer, Rick Buckler, has just kicked the bucket… Now, it’s hard to say whether the band’s sound would have been drastically different with another drummer (he probably wasn’t on the same level as The Who’s drummer, for instance), but it’s a good excuse to put on a track from this absolutely brilliant English punk band. A band that managed to evolve and become one of the pillars—no, one of the treasures—of English pop, leaning more and more toward soul and funk.

They split at the end of ’82 and never reunited, with their steadfast leader, Paul Weller, refusing to give in to the industry’s siren calls, despite the tempting piles of sterling. Meanwhile, the bassist and drummer spent the following years living off their past glory, essentially forming a tribute band to their own defunct group… while Weller carried on with his solo career, cementing himself as a true British institution.

Here’s a track from their very last album (1982), where you’ll notice just how far they had strayed from their punk roots—proving that the drummer had more than enough chops to keep up with such a drastic shift in style.

Le batteur de The Jam, Rick Buckler, vient de casser sa pipe… Alors, difficile de dire si le son du groupe aurait été drastiquement différent avec un autre batteur (il n’était sans doute pas l’équivalent du batteur des Who par exemple) mais c’est l’occasion de se mettre un morceau de ce groupe absolument fabuleux du punk anglais… groupe qui a su évoluer pour devenir un des piliers, que dis-je, un des trésors de la pop (lorgnant de plus en plus vers la soul et le funk) anglaise. Séparés fin 82, jamais reformés depuis, leur rigide leader Paul Weller n’ayant jamais cédé aux sirènes de l’industrie musicale qui allongeait pourtant les livres sterling, le bassiste et le batteur auront continué à vivre sur leurs acquis sous forme de Tribute Band de leur propre groupe défunt… alors que Weller poursuit toujours sa carrière, véritable institution britannique…
